Modern pools are designed as level deck, where the most polluted water is removed from the surface of the pool and directed to a balance tank, via a transfer channel. This polluted water is then drawn through the filtration and water treatment process, but over a period of time, settled particulate builds up in the balance tank and needs cleaning.
The PWTAG recommendation is that your balance tank should be inspected and cleaned at least once per annum. All debris is removed from the tank and the surfaces are brushed and flushed down with 10mg/l chlorinated water. This helps to prevent bacteriological growth in the tank.
Clearly balance tanks are confined spaces and should only be accessed by suitably trained specialists.
