The Buxton Crescent Wellness Spa, situated in Buxton’s Natural Mineral Baths, part of the Ensana Buxton Crescent Health Spa Hotel, and underneath the Old Hall Hotel, is now open, 17 years after the careful restoration began.
The Crescent Hotel & Thermal Spa promises its guests something special: 21st century pampering in the elegant surroundings of one of England’s finest Georgian buildings. This is a spa experience as rich in history as it is in healthy minerals. The Crescent was the centrepiece of the Fifth Duke of Devonshire’s plans to establish a fashionable Georgian spa town in Buxton. The Grade I-listed building is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the country. The redevelopment and restoration of the magnificent building was completed during the summer of 2020 and opened, under Covid-19 restrictions, on 1st October 2020. Read all about its renovation here.
The Natural Mineral Baths evolved over many centuries and occupies the site of ancient Roman baths and later Georgian baths situated over the main mineral water spring. The current building was constructed in 1853 to the design of Henry Curry and was altered in the 1920s. It was partly refurbished in the mid 20th Century as the town’s tourist information centre but the majority of the building lay empty since 1972.
The renovated spa brings together the very best of the traditional and the modern. At the heart of the complex is the original thermal pool, fed by mineral water from a nearby ancient spring (St Anne’s Well) that emerges deep from the earth at a temperature of 27°C. In addition, there are pampering treatments featuring mineral-packed mud, specially tailored healthy lifestyle programmes, and a host of relaxation and leisure facilities including an indoor/outdoor pool with water features, a sauna, steam and ice rooms, a fitness studio and a beauty salon. FT Leisure delivered all the pool technology and working with Hydrogeologists, the Ladies pool is fed with the mineral rich natural spring water.
Adjoining the spa complex is the luxury hotel, allowing guests to enjoy a truly luxurious experience – accommodation with all the trimmings. Its 80 tastefully furnished bedrooms and suites offer all that a modern traveller expects. Like the spa, the hotel will combine modern comforts with gracious hospitality. The splendid 18th century ballroom – known as the Assembly Room – has been fully refurbished, and the spa café and several function rooms incorporate period features. And with a restaurant and two bars to choose from, guests can round-off a relaxing spa day with an evening of excellent food and drink.
The Wellness Spa uses Buxton’s natural thermal mineral water and boasts a Thermal Pool, Bio-thermal sauna, CO2 Mineral Bath, Infra-red sauna, Aroma steam room, Indoor-to-outside Roof-top pool with two integrated jacuzzi zones, Finnish sauna, steam room, relaxation pool, fitness studio and gym, ice fountain and a salt cave. For the therapeutic thermal mud body treatments, mud is sent from the infamous Hévíz Lake in Hungary.
